RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
for grades K-12 (English) and grades K-5 (Spanish) for the new year beginning in September will be today Sunday, August 7 & 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Cost to attend St. Joseph’s Religious Education Program is $50 per child for K-8 program and $70 per child for grades 9-12. A minimum tuition of $30 per child is required at time of registration. The balance of tuition for each child MUST be paid before child attends class in September. Pre-registration is required, class sizes are limited and registration is accepted on a first come basis. ¿Qué hacer si usted o un familiar es detenido por un oficial?

¿Qué derechos tenemos?

Boletín de Prensa- Coalición de Líderes Latinos, CLILA, le invita al Taller “Conozca sus Derechos, Cuente su Historia”, el jueves 28 de julio para escuchar a abogados de derechos humanos que vienen de organizaciones nacionales como la Unión de Derechos Civiles (ACLU) a donar su tiempo para informarnos cuáles son nuestros derechos si un oficial de policía o sheriff, o de inmigración lo detiene, y qué hacer y qué no hacer al respecto. También hablaremos qué es discriminación racial y analizaremos si está ocurriendo en Dalton o no, así como en áreas alrededor.

También es una oportunidad para contar su historia, si ha sido detenido por algún oficial, o usted o su familiar cayó en un retén, o si usted tiene documentos y fue cuestionado, o si se le pidieron documentos a los pasajeros, o cualquier incidente que usted tenga duda de si fue tratado apropiadamente o no. Le invitamos a que cuente su historia, es muy importante dar a conocer el dolor humano que esto causa y documentar lo que ocurre para buscar soluciones mas efectivas.

Si le preocupa el número de retenes que están ocurriendo y el número de detenciones, así como la separación de las familias, venga y pase la voz.

Esta es una gran oportunidad de estar informados y de continuar organizándonos para proteger a nuestras familias y a nuestra comunidad.

Saint Joseph's will offer a Penance Service on Monday, March 21st, beginning at 7:00 pm. A half-dozen priests will be available for individual confessions. Please come to prepare for Easter by celebrating this wonderful sacrament.

Fast and Abstinence: Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the major days for fasting in general for those who have reached the age 18 and are not yet 60. Abstinence means no meat on those days for those who are age 14 [or over]. General canon law says that all Fridays are days of abstinence (no meat) but if you want to eat meat, you should substitute some other form of penance. The US rules for abstinence from meat includes all Fridays during Lent; Fast (small meals, no snacks) + Abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

   Do You Need Help in Talking to Your Child About Chastity? Would you like to jump-start communication with your son or daughter? Do you need help in talking to your child about chastity, sexuality, marriage, dating and other important topics? Would you like to spend time with other families who share your values and want the best for their children? Would you like to do all this in an environment that is relaxed, fun and respects the dignity of everyone present?
   If you answered yes to any of these questions and you're the parent of an 8th grade child, we encourage you to register for the Real Love & Real Life parent-child program, to be held at OLPH in Chattanooga on February 25 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. and February 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This fun and informative program is for parents to attend with your 8th grader. You'll see and hear skits, video clips and informative presenters. You can also participate in group breakout sessions and interactive games. Topics include: communication skills, chastity, dating and marriage, true self worth, fertility appreciation, friendships and lots more. Most importantly, this program gives you focused time with your child to talk about some of the most important topics in life.
   The Real Love & Real Life program is presented by Family Honor, a national organization that creates opportunities and provides tools to help parents and children connect and communicate about important life issues, with a special focus on God’s gift of sexuality. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal now begins in January rather than in late October. Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Archbishop Gregory asking for a pledge to the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. The Appeal funds the operations of the Archdiocese which include seminarian education, the continuing education of our priests, training for those who serve in our Faith Formation programs, and support for Catholic Education, Catholic Charities and Child and Youth protection.
This year, the theme of the Appeal s, “I will never forget you.” God never forgets us. Even when we believe that our successes are self made, it is the talents that God has given us that allow us to get where we are. He is always giving to us. His grace is always there for us. One way that we can show our gratitude is by offering our generous financial support to our parish and to our Archdiocese. The gifts that we give enable ministries and services that touch thousands of lives.

We will begin with rosary at 5:00 p.m. followed by an uplifting talk, The Holy Eucharist, Jesus’ Gift of Himself: The Eucharist is the banquet of the Kingdom of God. In the same way that Jesus was present at the Last Supper with his disciples He is also present in the Sacrament of the Eucharist when the priest consecrates the bread and wine at Mass. This weekend, Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses are celebrated as usual.

We will honor the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God on New Year's Eve and Day. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but you may welcome the New Year and honor Our Lady with a Mass in Spanish at 7:00 p.m. Friday and a Mass in English at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

This coming Wednesday we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. We celebrate Mary "as the first fruits of Christ's redeeming harvest, preserved from sin from the moment of her conception." Even before it was proclaimed as dogma by Pope Pius IX in 1854, the bishops of the United States declared Mary the nation's patroness under this title. El próximo miércoles celebraremos la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Catholics Come Home - Católicos Regresen

Beginning this Advent an evangelization effort will support local parish efforts to reach out to inactive Catholics through a media campaign called Catholics Come Home Georgia. The Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Diocese of Savannah are partnering with media organization CatholicsComeHome.org to show a powerful, diverse set of commercials depicting the history, beauty and strengths of the Catholic Church on television channels around the state. Networks will include ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, as well as cable stations TBS, Telemundo, and Univision. The commercial campaign will begin in mid-December 2010 and run for about six weeks. Parishioners are urged to support this evangelization initiative with their prayers, involvements and financial support. Thursday, December 2nd

Middle School Youth will participate in Dalton Christmas Parade riding in a decorated trailer and singing Christmas carols during the parade route!!!

Meet at the Dalton Public Library parking lot, 310 Cappes St., at 5:15 p.m.

Parents will pick child up at Dalton Public Library parking lot at 7:30 p.m. (pick-up time is approximate depending on ending time of parade)

If possible, please wear a red shirt and blue jeans.

On Sunday, November 21, at the 4:00 p.m. bilingual mass the Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama will celebrate the ceremony in which the youths who have completed two years of preparation will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

We have 77 candidates to be confirmed, to avoid overcrowding and you normally attend this mass, please consider attending another mass this weekend. There will be a reception after the ceremony at the Parish Hall for the Bishop, Confirmandi, and their families. A reminder to all the candidates who are going to receive this Sacrament, to meet in the church on Saturday, November 20, at 4:00 p.m. with their sponsors for the ceremony’s rehearsal. Also we remind you that on Sunday, November 21, all candidates meet at 3:00 p.m.

Cherub Choir

Cherub Choir for 1-8 grades is planning on singing for the December 24, Christmas Eve 5 p.m. Children’s Mass in English and we need angelic voices! Our practice dates will be Wednesday, November 17, December 1 & 15, 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, December 16 and 23, 6-7 p.m. All practices will be in the choir loft. If you attend Religious Education class on Wednesday evening and are in 1-4 grade classes you will have special permission to miss the last ten minutes of class and grades 5-8 the first ten minutes of class on the days of practice as long as a parent permission form (in the bulletin) has been filled out and returned. If you have any questions, please contact Janet Lull (call the office)!

Parents, please check your Christmas calendar and be sure your family will be in town for Christmas Eve Children’s celebration before committing your child. Thanks!

Dalton Women's Enrichment Center Collection

Thank you to the member's of St. Joseph's who contributed to our collection for the Dalton Women's Enrichment Center during the Respect Life Month of October. We collected $1700 and presented it to the WEC this week. Thank you also to those who help women in crisis pregnancies through your time and talent. This is a great ministry in Dalton that St. Joseph's is proud to support.

Respect Life Sunday

This weekend is Respect Life Sunday here at St. Joseph's. We pray for greater respect for life, especially for the unborn. In two weeks, our second collection will be for the Women's Enrichment Center in Dalton, a Crisis Pregnancy Center that helps pregnant women and their children in many ways.

I've told you all that my little sister, Andrea, is on The Amazing Race this year. Well, her story is a Pro-Life story, and here it is, as told on the Internet.

I love this story about a mom (Andie DeKroon) who gave her daughter up for adoption. She was unmarried and 22 years old at the time. Later, God blessed her with 10 more children.

In 2008, University of Georgia student Jenna Sykes decided that she wanted to get in touch with her birth mom. Andie agreed, so they started writing letters. Now, Jenna is about the same age as Andie was back then. And they are competing together in the upcoming season of The Amazing Race on CBS!

Think of it. Andie could have said “that baby will ruin my life.” She did’t. She had faith in the future. She loved God’s creation more than her own convenience. And now God continues to bless her with riches beyond measure.

The Heros of Vacation Bible School

Last week, we had Vacation Bible School. The kids had a great time, with singing, dancing, playing, and learning. The theme was "Heros", and the kids learned how being like Christ is being a Hero to the world.

Juan José Terán was ordained to the transitional diaconate by Archbishop Wilton Gregory at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta (Juan is on the front row, right; Deacon Charles Okeke on the left, On the top row, Father Luke Ballman, Vocation's Director, Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Auxiliary Bishop Luis Zarama, and Retired Archbishop John Donghue). Deacon Juan has been a member of our parish for 13 years. He will now complete his seminary studies as he completes his preparation for priestly ordination. Please join me in congratulating him! Deacon Juan, know that the prayers of our parish are always with you, that God bless your ministry as a deacon and you continue to respond to His call in your life.

God, our Father, we turn to you in this time of great need. We trust in your loving kindness and ask you to hear the prayers we offer for Your Church. A Graduation Prayer

Dalton Citizen's Police Academy

I had an opportunity this year to participate in a 12-week program offered by the Dalton Police Department called the "Citizens Police Academy". It was an opportunity to better understand the Dalton Police Department and the broader community. I met lots of citizens, and many of our parishioners have participated in the past, with Joe Martin attending the program with me this year. St. Joseph's members Miquel Treviño and Sarah Campione came with me to the graduation banquet.

The Runner's Prayer

Many people who participated in Saturday's The Run For John have asked about the prayer I used as the Benediction to begin the 5k Race. I "borrowed" it from this blog and adapted it for our use. Our Father,

Accept our gratitude for the opportunity to participate in this contest and in the larger race of life. We accept with thankfulness the wholeness and well being which running contributes to our living. As running brings pleasure to our lives so may our efforts on this day bring pleasure to you, our Creator.

We give thanks for physical bodies wonderfully made. Help us to exercise good stewardship of the health, energy, and clarity of mind provided for our use. Bless our efforts in training to develop these gifts to their full potential.

Give us the strength to endure and the passion to persevere. Protect us from injury and illness. May we possess courage and character in adequate supply to meet the challenge before us.

Grant each of us the integrity to do our best in the quest to finish well. We can do no more and desire no less.

Thank you for the sense of community created by our common commitment to run. As we seek to realize personal goals help us to also celebrate the accomplishments of others. Grant that we may find joy not only in competition but also in the privilege of running together.

Father, we offer this run today in memory of John Bruner, who was an inspiration to us all. Grant comfort to his family and all those who loved him. May our race today be a tribute to our love for him and our union with one another in Christ.
